Indira Gandhi, India’s Prime Minister from 1966-1977, declared a state of Emergency in India after the Supreme Court disallowed her to dispense her prime ministerial duties after the High Court in Allahbad set aside her election on charges of electoral malpractice.
During the Emergency, most of the fundamental rights of Indians were restricted, and 100s of people were detained as political prisoners without having the right to approach a court of law in case of an illegal detention. These political prisoners involved eminent politicians from various political parties such as JP Narayan from the Communist Party, LK Advani and Atal Bihari Vajpayee from the Bharatiya Jan Sangh, etc.
Indira Gandhi decided to lift the Emergency in 1977, and a re-election was called by her. This election saw her lose with a massive victory for the Opposition bloc (the Janata Dal) which composed of political parties from different sides of the political aisle. She came back to power in 1981."
